Community Training: “Water resource protection in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin and promote community-based initiatives on reducing water pollution”

On June 16 and 18, 2022, CEWAREC and the Department of Minerals & Water Resources organized the Training Course: “Water resource protection in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin and promote community-based initiatives on reducing water pollution”, within the framework of the “Collective Action for Water Conservation” Project. The project is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Cooperation (USAID), with the Center for Environment and Community Research as the coordinating agency.

On June 16, 2022, the theoretical training session on the topic “Water resource conservation in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin and promote community-based initiatives on reducing water pollution” was held. The objective of the training is to provide staffs whose work is related to environmental – water resources, stakeholders and riverside community’s representative knowledge on:

  • The importance of water resources for socio-economic development
  • The plan for exploitation, protection, prevention and response to saltwater intrusion, ensuring a safe water supply in Da Nang city.
  • Skills to monitor the exploitation and use of water resources as well as the discharge of wastewater into sources, especially for projects located in sanitary protection zones of domestic water supply areas.

Through the Training course, trainees would have a clear understanding of water exploiting locations and constructions that supply water to Da Nang city in rivers and streams; as well as risks of water shortage, water pollution and the roles and responsibilities of individuals and organizations involved in protecting the purity of rivers, which is also protecting our health and our lives not only for the present but also for future generations.

The trainer team for this course includes experienced experts and officers working in the field of irrigation – hydroelectricity in Da Nang and Quang Nam:

  • MSc. Dang Quoc Trinh – Lecturer at the Central College of Technology, Economics and Irrigation;
  • Dr. Le Hung and Dr. To Thuy Nga: Da Nang University of Science and Technology;
  • Representatives of Da Nang Irrigation Exploitation Ltd. (instructions on fieldwork at An Trach irrigation system).

The training course covered a number of effective solutions and specific methods to exploit, protect and economically use water resources in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin, ensuring safe water supply until the end of the dry season and strengthening the cooperation among stakeholders in the field of water resources.

On June 17, 2022, trainees conducted a field survey at the sites of exploiting and regulating water sources in Da Nang city and Quang Nam province: An Trach irrigation system – An Trach dam, the temporary dam at the confluence of the Quang Hue River, Cau Do water plant. Joining the fieldwork session were Mr. Vo Nguyen Chuong – Deputy Director of Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Dr. To Thuy Nga – Da Nang University of Science and Technology, along with CECR and stakeholders related to water resource management in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin in Da Nang.

At the An Trach irritating system – An Trach dam, trainees were explained and demonstrated the actual roles of this irrigating system, as well as difficulties in ensuring water source for Da Nang city and the future orientation of ensuring water security.

At the temporary dam at the confluence of the Quang Hue River and Cau Do water plant, trainee groups were presented about the role and operation of the constructions by experts, especially the staff dedicated to the above sites, therefore giving them an improved view of the effective management of water resources in Da Nang and also in the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin.
