FESTIVAL DAY PROGRAM: PIONEER SCHOOLS IN THE REDUCTION, CLASSIFICATION, AND RECYCLING OF LOW-VALUE PLASTIC WASTE IN NAM TU LIEM DISTRICT IN 2022

On the morning of December 17, 2022, at Tay Mo Secondary School, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi, the Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR) cooperated with the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Tu Liem District organized the Festival Day “Pioneer school in the reduction, classification, and recycling of low-value plastic waste in Nam Tu Liem district in 2022”. The activity is within the framework of the “Environmental education program for secondary school students on the reduction, classification, and recycling of low-value plastic waste” program under the project “Advancing Solutions to Plastic Pollution through Inclusive Recycling” funded by the Ocean Conservancy, implemented by CECR in Nam Tu Liem district.

Implementing Plan No. 149/KH-UBND dated May 4, 2022, of the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem District on The prevention and control of plastic waste and plastic bags until 2020 with a vision to 2025; Plan No. 583/KH-PGDDT dated October 7, 2022, of the Department of Education and Training of Nam Tu Liem District on the Implementation of “Environmental education program for secondary school students on the reduction, classification, and recycling of low-value plastic waste” program to raise awareness of teachers, staff, students, and parents in Nam Tu Liem district about waste pollution, the harmful effects of low-value waste on people and the environment, to change from awareness to concrete action to educate students to reduce and classify waste at source, especially low-value waste, take the initiative on reducing and classifying waste at secondary schools in Nam Tu Liem district. Each student will become an active propagandist to family, school, and society in implementing waste classification at source, contributing to achieving the common goal of the “Environmental education program for secondary school students on the reduction, classification, and recycling of low-value plastic waste” program.

The festival day program had the participation of more than 1,500 students, teachers, parents of 24 secondary schools in Nam Tu Liem district, and Ms. Dao Thi Hong Le – Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Tu Liem District; Mr. Nguyen Quy Trang – Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Nam Tu Liem District; Ms. Doan Vu Thao Ly – Deputy Director of the Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR).

In his opening remark at the program, Mr. Nguyen Quy Trang, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Nam Tu Liem district, shared: “With the theme of this year’s program, I hope that the students will be propagandists to parents and family members on the classification, reduction and recycling of single-use plastic waste, low-value waste, and joining hands to protect the living environment. I also hope that, in the coming time, educational programs will continue to receive the attention and support of experts, scientists, People’s Councils, People’s Committees, Departments of Natural Resources and Environment of the District, and the education sector to continue implementing meaningful and widespread environmental education programs.

Speaking at the program, Ms. Dao Thi Hong Le, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Tu Liem District, emphasized: “Being well aware of the current situation of environmental pollution in waste, especially plastic waste, the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem District determined that the goal of reducing plastic and nylon waste has become an urgent requirement right now, first of all, starting from reducing the consumption of non-degradable plastic and nylon products, especially single-use plastic products. With the results achieved by 24 secondary schools, the District believes that this is a practical, effective, and need-to-be-replicated environmental protection education program, the results achieved need to be recognized by all levels and sectors to widely propagate to parents and the community to change behavior to protect the environment.

Through the program, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Education and Training of Nam Tu Liem District commended and awarded prizes to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements and active participation in the program’s activities. In addition, at the stage of Tay Mo Secondary School, environmental awareness game programs, cultural performances, and a Waste Recycling Booth contest were held to convey the message of reducing, classifying, and recycling low-value plastic waste to teachers, parents, and students.

The environmental education program for secondary school students on the reduction, classification, and recycling of low-value plastic waste has contributed to raising awareness of environmental protection for each school, teacher, and student. Through actions such as cleaning streets and public places, conserving and protecting water sources, planting trees, participating in collective activities, and building innovative models of reducing and recycling plastic waste, students have a better sense of environmental protection.
