In the morning of December 23th, 2014, Hanoi, Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR), Coalition for Clean Water (CCW) organized the seminar “The Role of Community and Gender in Protection Environment”. Attending the workshop were community representatives from Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Son La, Binh Duong, the members of the Hanoi Lake Club (Women Union from Hoang Van Thu Ward, Quang An Ward, Ngoc Khanh, Living Green Club – Ha Dinh Ward, volunteer students from Hanoi University of Science and Technology and National Economics University), experts from the Coalition for Clean Water.
The seminar is an opportunity for CECR, CCW to construct and mount the network of communities participating in the activities of the CECR and CCW. This is also the chance for partners in the network of CECR to get acquainted and share experiences in local environmental protection. It also is an opportunity for CECR to study and promote gender issues in local environmental protection.
At the seminar, Mr. Nghiem Xuan Bach – Former Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment of the National Assembly Office shared on the legal basis of the role of community in environmental protection, according to which the role of community participation in environmental protection has been stipulated in the Constitution in 2013 and the Law on Environmental Protection 2014.
Representatives of local authorities have shared the best practices in environmental protection and environmental problems that their local are facing. Most of the problems that local governments are facing are related to water pollution.
– Ninh Binh: the problem of communal waste from upstream, downstream floated to Mang Ca Lake causing lake pollution.

– Bac Ninh: the discharge of Khac Niem rice vermicelli village and Dabaco Factory of Farming and Food processing polluted 4 canals, influencing social and economic life, especially agricultural production.

– Binh Duong: the pollution problem of the magic stream Bung Cu, although the people have proposed several times but the Committee is still pending due to financial problems.

– Son La: coffee production enterprises contaminated the watershed, possibly affected the clean water source of the city as it is the water that Son La Clean Water Factory use to supply for city residents.

– For localities in Hanoi: the issue of lakes encroachment, people’s lake protection awareness in addition to domestic waste problem.

After the seminar, each locality will offer a specific plan to address environmental issues, the implementation of these plans will be supported by CECR, CCW in 2015.
