“CLEAN WATER, STRONG ECONOMY”

Dear participants,
Earth Day (22/4) for the first time were proposed in the United States in 1970 and 2009 by the United Nations and recognized, launched globally, attracted hundreds of million people in 192 countries participated in. The purpose of Earth day is to raise awareness and mobilize resources for environmental protection. In Vietnam, the first Earth Day event was held in 2012, by the General Department of the Environment, Environmental Research Center and the Community (CECR) and the US Embassy located at Ngoc Khanh Lake, Hanoi.

Vietnam, with an abundant amount of surface water resources including 3450 rivers and streams of more than 10 kilometers long and thousands of lakes, ponds, wetlands, is now at risk of severe water pollution. According to the “National Environmental Report 2012” in just over four years ago, there were about 6 million cases of water-related diseases on a national scale, the direct cost for medical care of cholera, typhoid, dysentery and malaria is around 400 billion. Most river systems, lakes are polluted in varying degrees.

Earth Day this year is held by the General Department of Environment and Environment Research Centre and the Community with the following key message “Clean water, strong economy”, to promote the participation of the parties related to the control and prevention of water pollution process, gradually change from heavy pollution trends to less polluted and cleaner water. The event will be held at the Botanical Gardens – Hanoi, with the participation of nearly 1,000 people from businesses, unions associations, scientific and technical organizations, youth, students from universities at Hanoi.
