‘WHERE DOES OUR PLASTIC WASTE GO?’ THE EVENT TO HOAN KIEM DISTRICT PRIMARY STUDENTS

Last April 29, the event “Where does our plastic waste go?” was officially held by the People’s Committee of Hoan Kiem District (Hanoi) in collaboration with the Center of Environment and Community Research under the main sponsorship of Dow Chemical Vietnam Co., Ltd. The event is within the framework of the project “A community-based circular economy model for plastic waste in Hoan Kiem district”.

With the goal of raising awareness about sorting waste at sources, treating plastic waste properly and suggesting some ways to recycle plastic waste into useful items, this event has brought 80 Students from 2 primary schools Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan (Hoan Kiem district) a lot of useful knowledge about sorting, collecting and recycling low-value plastic waste. At the beginning of the event, the students were guided to properly distinguish: low-value plastic waste, high-value plastic waste and organic waste. Next, the coordinators told them the stories of the waste path, from the time it was collected at home by the sanitation workers as low-value plastic waste, to its life at the recycling plant and its miraculous rebirth in the form of tiles, paving bricks, familiar and extremely useful objects in everyday life. At the end of the event, the students participated in a game called “Find the right kind of garbage”. This game plays a reconsolidating role, helping them to remember more what they have learned and how to apply them in sorting garbage at home.

The event has received a positive responses from teachers and students. Dang Thanh Ha – a student at Phuc Tan Primary School expressed her interest in what she had learned and wanted to sort garbage at home together with her parents before throwing away. Do Thi Hong Nhung – Principal of Chuong Duong Primary School said: “Events like these are really meaningful in raising awareness for young children, by helping them learn how to sort plastic waste through interactive activities. I believe that they will apply their knowledge in everyday life to help protect the environment.”
