WORKSHOP ON SHARING EXPERIENCES AND LESSON LEARNED IN IMPLEMENTING THE PROJECT ADVANCING SOLUTIONS TO PLASTIC POLLUTION THROUGH INCLUSIVE RECYCLING

On the morning of January 12, the Center for Environment and Community Research in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem District held a Workshop on sharing experiences and lesson learned in implementing the project “Advancing Solutions to Plastic Pollution through Inclusive Recycling”.

Overview of the conference

Attending the conference were Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nam – QUV, Vice Chairman of Nam Tu Liem District People’s Committee; Ms. Edith Cecchini – International Plastics Director, Ocean Conservancy; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen – International Cooperation Department, Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations; Dr. Nguyen Khac Hung – CEO of CECR; Ms. Le Thi Bich Ha – QUV, Chairwoman of the District Women’s Union; representatives of the city’s and district’s departments, divisions and branches; representatives of the wards’ leaders; The core group, the female scrap collectors participate in the project in Me Tri, My Dinh 1, and My Dinh 2 wards.

In his opening remark at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nam, Vice Chairman of the District People’s Committee, congratulated the success of the project “Advancing Solutions to Plastic Pollution through Inclusive Recycling”. He said that after 2 years of implementation, the project has received the people’s consensus and raised people’s awareness about the habit of using single-use plastic products and the habit of classifying and recycling waste. As a result, 38 tons of low-value plastic waste were collected and classified for treatment and recycling, contributing to reducing environmental pollution and protecting human health. With the results achieved, he said that this is a good, practical, effective environmental protection model that needs to be replicated. The success of the pilot model has been confirmed and recognized by all levels and sectors in order to propagate and replicate the model in other localities. In order to maintain and promote the achieved results, Vice Chairman of the District People’s Committee Nguyen Quoc Nam suggested that the People’s Committees of wards strengthen the work of environmental protection, focusing on directing and replicating the pilot model together with the People’s Committee. The district needs to control, maintain, and improve environmental quality in order to make Nam Tu Liem district become a green, clean, beautiful, and livable district.

In their online speeches at the conference, Ms. Edith Cecchini, International Plastics Director, Ocean Conservancy, and Ms. Le Thi Thanh Huyen, International Cooperation Department, VUSTA, congratulated the success of the project and thanked the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem District and CECR for organizing a conference on summary and experience sharing in implementing the project “Advancing Solutions to Plastic Pollution through Inclusive Recycling” for units, experts and individuals to share the work that has been implemented in the project in the past 2 years. They hope that in the coming time, the People’s Committee and Women’s Union of Nam Tu Liem district will continue to pay attention and actively participate in the project’s activities.

Ms. Dao Thi Hong Le, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the District, presented the project result report

Reporting the project implementation results, Ms. Dao Thi Hong Le, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the district said that, after 2 years of implementation, the project had achieved many positive results, which are: 1 female scrap collector supporting club managed by the Women’s Union of Nam Tu Liem district; Organized 20 training programs for 300 women, members of the Women’s Union in the district; 150 women are involved and supported from the model; 200 women received emergency financial support in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; 35,000kg of waste including plastic, confectionery, milk cartons are collected; 9000 households were able to spread the message and participate in classifying waste at source; 24 secondary schools with 19,000 students were propagated about waste classification; 20 low-value waste reduction, classification, and recycling initiatives developed…

Ms. Doan Vu Thao Ly – Deputy Director of CECR presented and shared experiences after the implementation of the project

At the conference, the delegates were told by Ms. Doan Vu Thao Ly – Deputy Director of CECR to share difficulties and challenges, and lessons on mobilizing the participation of women’s groups of informal collectors in waste management. The project’s findings and lessons learned have been summarized into policy recommendations to contribute to the process of building and implementing a circular economy in Vietnam.

Round-table discussion

Within the framework of the program, the participants discussed and made recommendations and suggestions, measures to contribute to effectively promoting the implementation of a low-value plastic waste model that can be replicated in Hanoi City.

In his concluding speech at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Khac Hung, CEO of CECR, believed that with the enthusiasm of the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem District and the strong support of local government agencies, as well as good news from Ocean Conservancy and IKEA sponsors, it would continue to support activities in the coming time, together with the commitment of the female scrap collectors participating in the project’s collection and recycling chain, activities, models, and clubs in Nam Tu Liem district effectively implemented, contributing to the plans “Preventing plastic waste and plastic bags, towards a circular economy of plastic waste in Nam Tu Liem district” with the common goal of classifying domestic waste at source reaches 100% by 2025.

The organizing committee has awarded medals and gifts to units, residential groups, and women who actively participate in the project “Advancing Solutions to Plastic Pollution through Inclusive Recycling”.
